Headaches are a common complaint that patients seek chiropractic assistance for. They may be sharp, dull, aching and/or a throbbing pain. One of the causes of headaches is a misalignment in the cervical and thoracic spine.

There are 3 main types of headaches.

  • Migraines;
  • Tension headaches; and
  • Sub-occipital headaches.

Migraines

  • Commonly begin in the morning;
  • Can be very intense and throbbing;
  • Can cause light sensitivity;
  • Can involve double vision, nausea and vomiting; and
  • Generally starts on one side of your head.

Tension Headaches

  • This headache typically feels like there is a tight band around your head;
  • Muscles around your skull feel very tight;
  • Usually get worse in the evenings;
  • Worsens on stressful days; and
  • Relived by rest.

Sub-Occipital Headaches

  • Dull headache that are typically worse in both the mornings or evenings;
  • A feeling of pressure at the back of your skull, front of your head and behind your eyes;
  • Can cause you to feel lightheaded and dizzy;
  • Decrease in concentration; and
  • Commonly associated with neck and upper back pain or stiffness.
